The 2nd JFL Referee Training held

The 2nd JFL Referee Training was held on 6 May in Shin Yokohama, Kanagawa.
Focusing on the concept of “raising awareness of the issue and spotting them, that is something let you grow”, you have to know what “the issues” are. You will never notice the real issue if you don’t know the goal. Incorporating these concepts, this training gave participating referees a chance to discuss and time to “think”.

MAYUZUMI Toshiyuki, Chief Instructor
I explained the objective of the training is “controlling FKs smoothly” and held a discussion to specifically identify what they need to extract from the objective. I took time to get their understanding of how do you tell the objective is considered achieved, in what situation – when, what, how the things go. You have to consider what players, team, head coach, spectators are looking for.
We discussed what kind of “spotting skill” is required and when, for achieving the objective. I listed up the situation when you have to employ spotting skill.
I would assume they realized there was not enough amount of spotting the situation, particularly inadequate understanding of the players’ intention and purpose before and after a call.
Referees are requested to make a right judgment and act accordingly on the spot. We agreed all the skills for spotting the players’ intention is reflected on technical aspects, this will lead to achieving the objective of “controlling FKs smoothly” as a result.

This is important to spot many things by having a high awareness of the issue. Holding an active discussion on this topic, once again I realized the spotting skills is something I should make use of when I make a judgment on the spot, according to the intention and purpose of the players.
Rather than giving a yellow card for a rough play and a holding, I believe you should not give a yellow card for “blocking the threat of big scoring opportunity“. Participants seemed to have a common understanding that a referee is required to take a disciplinary action against players according to disciplinary code with clear reason.
It seems the referees all understand how important to have “a spotting skill” and “make a judgment according to the situation”.

Regarding the topics of this training, 1) increasing the numbers of spotting, 2) interpretation and reconciliation of “blocking the threat of big scoring opportunity”, I was able to look into, get straight and share the priority of what to watch and how to handle the situation through discussion and video analysis.
Also, participating in physical training (accelerating power) and practical training while implementing forecasting and spotting skill. I felt it is necessary to brush up my spotting skill to make analysis, better handle the situation taking players’ intention and purpose into account.
I am determined to devote myself to be a good referee, understanding that referee playing a big part of attractive football game and referee’s effort will help raise quality of the game.

I could sort the issues as the topic of this training was taken from the game I refereed. What I felt most was to increase the amount of “spotting” things.
Not just blowing the whistle, I started to realize it is important to do referring by closely watching the players’ intention and considering tactics of the teams.
It was good to review the interpretation of “blocking the threat of big scoring opportunity” and exchange ideas. When calling the foul, I realized it is important to get hold of the situation and numbers of players involved in offence, in addition to five items to consider for blocking goal-scoring opportunity.
I wish to keep improving my skill by repeating the things I learned in this seminar in “PDCA*” cycle.
