Japan cruise into U-17 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals

Japan overwhelmed Paraguay 10-0 in their second group match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica on Wednesday, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
Hasegawa Yui opened the scoring fiesta in the 15th minute when she collected a loose clearance and fired home.
Seven minutes later, Endo Yu scored and Miyagawa Asato took her turn in the 36th minute as Japan finished the first half 3-0 up.
Two minutes after break, Ichise Nana penetrated the Paraguayan defense to slot home after Paraguay failed to clear their lines.
Hiratsuka Maki struck in the 56th minute and Saihara Mizuki six minutes after that.
Sugita Hina then an 11-minute hat trick – with goals in the 75th minute, 85th minute and 86th minute – before substitute Kono Fuka added a penalty in additional time.
With two straight wins, Takakura Asako’s side took the lead in Group C, followed by Spain (three points), New Zealand (one) and Paraguay (zero). Spain earned their first points by beating New Zealand 3-0.
Takakura said, “What made me most happy today was that our players started scoring from the start and never stopped pushing forward through to the end.”
Japan will play New Zealand in their third and final group match on Sunday.
The quarterfinals will take place on March 27.
