Match Report

With temperatures hovering over 30 C, U-16 Japan National Team played their first match against U-17 Hiroshima Selection Team in the Balcom BMW CUP International Youth Soccer in Hiroshima 2015 on 9 August. The stadium was filled with around 2000 spectators.

Japan had been attacking aggressively from the beginning of the game. Then in the 11th minute, SUGIURA Fumiya scored directly from a free kick, 25 metres out to the left of the goal.

Japan continued attacking and after 40 minutes, IYORI Keitaro, who reacted to a right corner kick from MIYAMOTO Toshiaki, headed the ball home from height. The game went into the second half at 2-0.

In the second half, as Japan lost their rhythm a little due to the heat, they could not get any shots away with their opportunities. However, they defended solidly, and did not allow the opponent to score. Japan won their first game 2-0.

Japan will meet U-17 Uzbekistan National Team for their second game on Tuesday 11 August.

Coach and Players' Comments

KIMURA Kokichi, Coach
I assembled the team quickly ahead of this championship. After gathering together three days ago, I think the players performed really well in the high temperatures. We can improve our combinations in detail a lot. We also need to fix our problems.

Having said that, I’d like to point out that the players won against the Hiroshima Selection, who were elder than them, without any hesitation. As we have a one-day break before the second game, I’d like them to prepare well for the coming match.

SAKAI Masaki (Oita Trinita U-18)
I’m over the moon to be selected to play for the national team in this championship. I’d like to play well, displaying my skill, so that I can continue playing for the team. As today’s match was our first game, which was very important, it was vital to build up positive momentum for us.

Every player in our team used our bodies fully to defend and we could win the game. I was very pleased. Personally, I couldn’t play as I wanted to, I’d like to play better to contribute to the team’s victory in the remaining two games.

SAITO Mitsuki (Shonan Bellmare Youth)
As I was a captain for the match today, I stayed vocal and instructed other players to lead the team. However, in the second half, the opponent kept possession and I should have led my teammates better in some circumstances. I’m simply just pleased that we won the game, which brought us to the next stage.

Although we will play against opponents, who are physically bigger and swifter in the coming two games, I’d like to show our playing style and play well. Personally, I’d like to run even more for my team, intercept the ball more often in defence, and contribute to my team’s victory.

TANAKA Kosuke (Kyoto Sanga F.C. U-18)
Although there’re many newcomers in our team for this championship, we shared our vision very well between the players. We did press well up front and it was vital for us to win today’s game.

Having said that, there was plenty of room to improve, so that we can score whenever we have opportunities. As I think I should lead the team on and off the pitch, I’d like to win this championship just as we did in the U-16 International Dream Cup.
