Match Report
Japan Beach Soccer National Team had a training match against Brazil Beach Soccer National Team at Leme Beach, Rio de Janeiro on Friday 25 March. Despite playing a close match until the second period against higher-ranked opponents, Japan conceded a string of goals in the third period, ending up in a 6-2 loss.
Coach Marcelo MENDES said to the players before the match, "If you can bring out what you've worked on during this camp, I'm sure you can play a good game and win it." Just after the start of the first half, Brazil controlled the game with speed and high-level skills, but Japan hung on against the attacks led by goalkeeper TERUKINA Shingo. OBA Takaaki initiated his side attack with aggressive defence from the front and won the ball to fire a shot. But in the 8th minute, Brazil broke through Japan's right flank and tapped in a cross for the opening goal. Japan halt opponents' subsequent attacks before finishing the first period 1-0.
In the second period, Japan kept the possession and had more stretches playing on the opposing end. MOREIRA Ozu put home a direct free kick at centre of the pitch. But the well-combined Brazil tore down Japan’s defence in front of goal to put their side ahead. Japan showed aggressive attacks in attempt to get back on level terms but finished the second period 2-1.
In the third period, Japan ran out of steam and started making mistakes, resulting in giving away chances to the opponents. The errors caused goals against, and Brazil further extended the lead. Oba scored a consolation penalty, but the match ended in Japan's 6-2 loss.
Japan will have a rematch against Brazil tomorrow on Saturday 26. Even a short period of time, they will try to make the best possible preparation for a victory.
Coach and Players' Comments
Marcelo MENDES, Coach
We lost today, but my players must have learned a lot out of the result. We controlled the game well in the first and second periods. But in the third period, we started to make mistakes and gave away a lot of chances. If we had had higher concentration, the result would have been different. Tomorrow, we will make an adjustment to issues we got today and make the next one a better game.
TERUKINA Shingo (Sol Mar Praia)
In the first and second periods, we were behind but had already expected that. It's a good side that we were able to focus on the game without feeling pressed. Japan clearly slowed down in the third period and the opponents got their rhythm most of the time. We allowed them to get a grip on the game all the time and gave up goals. I knew what kind of tactics Brazil would use, but we lost completely in the third period. We will figure out what we can do and what we can't do against them and take advantage of the learnings for tomorrow's match.
OBA Takaaki (Dorsole Kitakyushu)
I'm really frustrated at today's 6-2 big-margin loss against Brazil. We had chances in key points but failed to convert. Then, we allowed them to pick up the pace. And in the third period when we got tired, we gave up goals one after another. We will talk about the issue we found out of today's loss in the afternoon meeting and get ready as a team for the second Brazil match tomorrow.
