Match report

U-19 Japan Women's National Team played against Mexico for the championship in the third match of their United States trip on the eighth day since their arrival.

Japan had the momentum from early. On 9th minute, HASEGAWA Yui received a cross from the left side with her chest and SHIRAKI Akari fired a shot. But it was saved by the Mexico goalkeeper. On 16th minute, Hasegawa's shot was again saved by the goalkeeper, but Shiraki ran into the loose ball and put it in to give Japan a 1-0 lead. On 20th, Shiraki through-ed a grounder pass from SUGITA Hina, and MOMIKI Yuka kicked it into the net to extend the lead. After that, Hasegawa and Momiki added another goals on 32th and 42nd minutes, respectively, and Japan entered halftime up 4-0.

Japan didn't get loose in the second half. As soon as the half began, Sigita reacted a return pass from KITAGAWA Hikaru to take a shot. It was once deflected by the goalkeeper, but Hasegawa put it in for the fifth goal for Japan. SEIKE Kiko connected a long pass from Kitagawa for a goal to make it 6-0 on 68th. On 71st, MIURA Narumi headed a Kitagawa cross into the net for the seventh goal. On 81st, Seike added another and on 90th SONODA Mizuki, who reacted a pass from MATSUBARA Shiho, netted one. U-19 Japan women's squad tamed Mexico 9-0 to win the championship.

Head Coach and Players' Comments

TAKAKURA Asako, head coach
We entered the third game with themes to develop our strength with the ball, raise the accuracy on every play and make shots when we could. Our offensive part, which was our issue in the second game, partially because we emphasized on that in our training yesterday, I think that we have better awareness for taking shots in today's game. We still had so many little mistakes, but played for the entire 90 minutes with concentration as a team, and finished the three games not giving up any goals. I think that those were our achievements. Towards August's AFC U-19 Women's Championship, we've got some positive feelings and issues in this tournament.

NORIMATSU Ruka (Urawa Reds Ladies)
We were able to earn the championship in U-20 Women's NTC invitational, having allowed no goals. But every game, we had so many issues, and in terms of the strengths on the ball and force both offensively and defensively, other teams were actually better. I think we are going to be a team that's competitive against the world by being peculiar about every single play we have and developing them.

We have the AFC U-19 Women's Championship in August. Japan failed to earn a spot in the last U-20 Women's World Cup. We don't absolutely want to go though the same disappointment like that. In order to win in it and grab a ticket for the world, I would like to spend every single day we have with strong pickiness and greed.

MOMIKI Yuka (Nippon TV Beleza)
We posted a 9-0 win over Mexico, so we ended up winning the tournament by winning all the games we played, not giving up any goals, in this tournament. We had a good result, but left so many issues. Because we are undersized, we need to have so many different elements to counter against those bigger opponents. The volumes of moves, how to get them off balance and playing predicting things beforehand are examples. We were able to play against bigger opponents this time, we reassured that we felt those points first hand.

In order to win a beth for the World Cup through the AFC U-19 Women's Championship, each one of us takes efforts when she goes back to her own club, and hopefully we want to be back here being better players at the next training camp.

SONODA Mizuki (Musashigaoka College)
As we've finished the tournament, I felt that we still needed to work harder, so it's important to inspire with each other inside team. We ended up win all the three games not giving up any goals, and I was able to score a goal, but we had more chances to score, so it was more like a game that we had issues to fix when I go back to our own clubs. I felt that I needed to be more particular about shooting and practicing on it myself. Towards the AFC U-19 women's championship, every individual needs to develop first and then make a better team.

MATSUMOTO Mamiko (Urawa Reds Ladies Youth)
We won all the three games and earned the championship, that was an achievement for us. But our main goal is to win in Asia at the moment. We came up with a lot of issues through this tournament. Unless we correct those issues, we don't think we are going to win in Asia. Each and every one of us needs to work hard in our daily practice and hopefully we can show a developed Japanese team in Asia. Personally, I have to look back on my own issues, and do my best to be selected on the members for the AFC U-19 Women's Championship.
