Match Report

With the first match drawn with China, Nadeshiko Japan needed as many goals as possible to get through the group stage. Japan took the initiative early and attacked forward against Jordan Women’s National Team.

After five minutes, Kawasumi opened the scoring when Miyama set up a through ball. In the 10th minute, Sugasawa’s lay-off from Sakaguchi’s cross fell to Kira, but her shot could not find the net. In the12th, Sugasawa headed home a cross from Kawasumi to make it 2-0. Then, Sakaguchi headed in a corner kick to extend the lead to 3-0. Sakaguchi again tapped in the deflection after Miyama sent it from the left flank to add up the scoring to 4-0. In the 36th, Ariyoshi provided an early cross, and when Kira reacted to the ball, that triggered opponent’s own goal for Japan’s fifth one. In the 39th and 41st minute, Sugasawa found the back of the net twice after Kira’s shots, which turned the score to 7-0. Japan promptly put the ball back to the centre circle every time they scored to show their avid efforts to keep attacking. In the 44th, when Kiryu broke through the left side and sent a cross in, Kira put a well-composed shot to finish the first half at 8-0.

The second half began with Kira’s second goal of the day. In the 60th minute, Miyama netted a diving header from Kawasumi’s set-up to make it 10-0. Osafune was replaced by Iwashimizu after she got a knock with another player in the 65th minute. After that Sakaguchi’s first hat trick in the eight years and Kawasumi’s second goal recorded 12-0 on the score sheet in the end.
In the Group B, China defeated Chinese Taipei 4-0, which gave Japan another match to qualify for the knockout stage.
The final match in the group stage against Chinese Taipei will kick off at 8 pm on Monday 22 September.

Comments

SASAKI Norio, Head Coach
Before the match, we knew the goal difference would be significant to advance to the knockout stage. We tried to play fast-tempo football and to tenaciously get the ball. From start to end, with quick transitioning between offence and defence, players made their best effort to score as many goals as possible. Our defence also worked hard to manage risks. There will be two matches played at the same time, our game against Chinese Taipei and the match between China and Jordan. We’ll try to keep the goal differences in mind and to fasten transitions between offence and defence, and hopefully we can win the match playing football with few mistakes during 90 minutes.

MIYAMA Aya (Okayama Yunogo Belle)
(When I scored) Kawasumi sent me a good ball that I just needed to touch it. That went just how I wanted it to be.
As a team, we still need to improve the quality. We came up with the shameless contest in the first match against China, so I wanted to show we can play solid football. We had good things and things that lead to the next. We will not only score goals but also improve the quality of football.

SAKAGUCHI Mizuho (Nippon TV Beleza)
I tried to feed passes forward in the early stages of our build-up even when we usually pass to the side. As an individual, I’m happy to score, but I had many shots that didn’t net. We had many opportunities to get more goals. That’s something we need to improve as a team.
In the final match of the group stage, we won’t know how many goals China score against Jordan, so we will also try to get as many goals as we can. I will always attempt middle-range shots and rushing for cross balls.

SUGASAWA Yuika (Jef United Ichihara Chiba Ladies)
I was personally striving for goals. I couldn’t turn other chances into a goal. That’s something I need to improve and I’m not satisfied with. But I’m satisfied with the goals in the sense that I could take advantage of my strength, high header. Whenever cross balls came to me, I always tried to head. It’s important to showcase myself at the tournament like this. It’s not only today, and I will keep up my plays.
