Match Report
The last game for the U-19 Japan National Team in the SBS Cup International Youth Soccer competition was against their rivals, the U-19 Korea national team.
This match was a prelude to the AFC U-19 Championship in October, as Japan and Korea will be in the same group.
The game changed early in the first half. In the eighth minute, Japan intercepted the ball on the left wing and Uchida passed it to Ochi, who was in the centre.
Then Uchida turned with the ball to pass to Kaneko, who drew in the opposition and kicked the ball to the right side. Sakai reacted to it and struck a superb opener with his right foot.
After 31 minutes, Korea dribbled up through the left side and crossed to the centre to score a goal, levelling the game. In the 39th minute, a Japanese passing mistake let Korea dribble up again through the right wing and shoot the ball. The game had turned around.
Japan, who were one goal behind, pressed the opponent more from the beginning of the second half in order to steal the ball to attack. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net due to the solid Korean defence. After 71 minutes, Nakatani, who ran up towards the goal reacting to a Japanese free kick, gained a penalty kick. Oyama calmly scored from the penalty spot, leveling the match. The score stayed 2-2, despite fierce attacks from both teams.
The game went to penalties for the second time in this competition for Japan. While Korea had five successful penalties, Japan missed one. Japan lost the game.
In the SBS Cup International Youth Soccer competition this year, Japan couldn’t get a winning result in all three matches within 80 minutes.
Comment
SUZUKI Masakazu, Head coach
In the first half, the balance of our defences wasn’t good and we conceded two goals. Although we created more attacking opportunities after the positioning change and some substitutions in the second half, we still couldn’t turn the game around. We’d like to learn lessons from this competition as a team, as well as individually, and improve ourselves through the Vietnamese tour in order to get ourselves ready for the AFC U-19 Championship in October.
MIURA Genta (Shimizu S-Pulse)
Although I aimed today’s to play a high-quality game and get a good result, learning from the match against Shizuoka Youth, I wasn’t satisfied with either the content or the result at all. I think we found the issues that need to be fixed both for the team and for the individuals in this competition before the final qualifying round. I feel positive about this. From tomorrow, we’ll go back to our respective club teams and improve ourselves.
KANEKO Shota (Shimizu S-Pulse)
I’m not satisfied with the content and the result of the match, either as a team or as an individual. It’s vital that each player works on the issues back at his team, taking the fact seriously that it’s only two months before the AFC U-19 Championship. I hope all of us will improve ourselves before getting together again. I appreciate all the people, who supported us in this competition. Thank you very much.
MOROOKA Yusuke (Fukuoka University)
I feel devastated that we couldn’t play our style and get good results as a team or as individuals through three matches in this SBS Cup. However, we saw the unusually high physical abilities and individual strength in the first match against Colombia, which was a good experience for us. Also it was good to play against Korea, who we’ll see again in the AFC U-19 Championship in October. Although we only have a limited time before the big championship in October, I hope each of us can improve ourselves back at our own teams, in preparation for the next championship.
OCHI Yamato (The SANNO Institute of Management)
We had difficult matches in this competition. We were not yet good enough, as we couldn’t win a single match in three games. With one month and a half to go before the AFC U-19 Championship in October, I’d like to do my best and fix my issues back in my team in order to get myself into good condition for October.
