Sanfrecce Hiroshima moved on to the 3rd round with a goal-rush in the 95th Emperor’s Cup

Match Report

Sanfrecce Hiroshima (J1) 8-0 (2-0, 6-0) Hiroshima University of Economics (Hiroshima)

The second round of the 95th Emperor’s Cup All Japan Football Championship was held on 5th September and Sanfrecce Hiroshima (J1) met Hiroshima University of Economics (Hiroshima) in Fukuyama Takegahana Stadium.

It was the first match for seeded Sanfrecce whereas Hiroshima University of Economics beat Tokushima University Hippocrates (Tokushima) in their first match of the competition on 30 August to get the chance to play against Sanfrecce, J1 team.

For Sanfrecce, the key seemed to be how quickly they could score the opening goal. Indeed, they did it in the 6th minute, SHIMIZU Kohei crossed the ball from right wing and KASHIWA Yoshifumi headed it in to the goal successfully.

Sanfrecce kept possession of the ball and attacked the opponent’s goal by using both wings, but Hiroshima University of Economic’s goalkeeper KOBAYASHI Kaito and other defenders protected their goal through consistent play until the 27th minute. Sanfrecce’s NOTSUDA Gakuto took a free kick and raised the ball from the right wing, ASANO Takuya headed the pass and that found the net.

The 2nd half started with Sanfrecce’s leading 2-0, and they didn’t stop their attack. They kept ball possession and made many scoring opportunities. In the 57th minute, DOUGLAS made the 3rd goal, and they kept scoring, in the 60th minute by AOYAMA Toshihiro, 61st minute by Notsuda, and in the 66th minute by Asano. The score was 6-0 and Sanfrecce decided to see out the rest of the match.

Hiroshima University of Economics tried to energise the team by substituting some players to get a goal and they found the scoring chance in the 73rd minute. ITO Taichi had a 1 on 1 situation against Sanfrecce’s goalkeeper from a defensive mistake, but the shot hit the left post. They couldn’t find the goal against a professional team.

After the chance, Sanfrecce added 2 other goals in the 85th minute by MINAGAWA Yusuke, and in the 94th minute by Notsuda. Sanfrecce achieved a crushing 8-0 victory and moved on to the next round, not allowing the opponent’s giant killing. In the 3rd round, they will face the winner of the match on 9 September, which will be between Roasso Kumamoto (J2) and Gainare Tottori (Tottori).

Coaches' Comments

MORIYASU Hajime, Coach (Sanfrecce Hiroshima)
For this match, the players prepared well with good sense of tension and that brought us the victory today. The first match of the Emperor’s Cup is also difficult for us. The ideal thing is that we can knock out our opponent, but even though it wouldn’t go as we expected, we just wanted to keep our level of play to beat the opponents. I appreciate them doing that in the match today.

We got 2 goals in the 1st half, but I don’t think that was enough - they could have done more. At the end of the 1st half, the opponents’ fighting spirit wasn’t low, so I encouraged the players to get the 3rd goal quickly, and gradually add more goals so that they would lose their spirit. I told them to keep their rhythm of play.

TAKAHASHI Shinichiro, Coach (Hiroshima University of Economics)
I have gotten to know the gap between us. However, our players did their best, moving well until the end of the match. I appreciate Sanfrecce for keeping their best to play against us, it was very good experience for us. It was the good gift given by Sanfrecce’s Aoyama by his mistake while we wanted to get one goal, but Ito’s shot didn’t find the net.

That told us about the difference between professional players and student players, and it was a very important experience for us. With a large audience and on a good pitch, we could play against the top team of J1 League. The referee was NISHIMURA Yuichi and we just had a very precious life experience.
