Marinos draw with ACL champions Guangzhou
13 March 2014
Yokohama F. Marinos drew 1-1 at home with reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande of China in their second group match of the AFC Champions League on Wednesday.
Kawasaki Frontale, meanwhile, fell 2-0 to Ulsan Hyundai Motors in Korea Republic.
Yokohama took the lead in the 21st minute when Hanato Jin slotted home in the area after picking up a loose ball following a Nakamura Shunsuke free-kick.
But Guangzhou leveled the scores in the 38th minute when Alessandro Diamanti curled in a free-kick from just outside the box.
The visitors kept pressure on Marinos with efforts from Muriki, Diamanti and Elkeson up front, but Marinos goalkeeper Enomoto Tetsuya did well between the posts.
Marinos manager Higuchi Yasuhiro said, “It was disappointing that we couldn’t earn three points as it was a good challenging performance against the reigning champions of the tournament.
“But playing against a team like them around this time of the season – still early in the season – I was able to see the status of my team. That was very useful.”
Marinos now have one point but are stuck at the bottom of Group G behind Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (four points), Guangzhou (four) and Melbourne Victory (one). Jeonbuk drew 2-2 against Melbourne.
In Korea, Kawasaki faced a strong attack from Ulsan, who featured Korea Republic forward Kim Shin Wook and former Gamba Osaka forward Rafinha.
Kawasaki held off their opponents until late in the second half when they gave up two goals.
Ulsan midfielder Yoo Jun Soo, who came off the bench in the 75th minute, scored in the 84th minute to break the deadlock. Kim Shin Wook made it 2-0 for the hosts three minutes into additional time.
With the results, coupled with Western Sydney Wanderers’ 1-0 win at Guizhou Renhe in China, Kawasaki are now third with three points in Group H, behind leaders Ulsan (six points) and Western Sydney (three). Guizhou are fourth with no points.
